Car Electrical Servicing FAQs

What are the main electrical components in a car?

Generally, the car’s electrical system consists of the battery, starter, and alternator, alongside cooling fans, the fuel pump switch, lighting, and the motor. The electrical system is intricate, and generally, if one of the primary components, such as the alternator, battery, or starter, fails, the car will not run or start properly.
Running a vehicle with a faulty electrical system can be both dangerous, and detrimental to the health of the vehicle. So, if you believe your vehicle is experiencing electrical issues, contact Auto Service & Tuning Centre to book in for an electrical system check with an expert technician.

This check will effectively pinpoint any issues present within the vehicle’s electrical system, and allow for a prompt adjustment or repair when needed.

How do I know if my car has an electrical problem?

Most modern vehicles are highly reliant on complex electrical systems, many of which they could not function without. Problems within the electrical system can lead to issues from minor inconvenience to failure to start. There are many indicators of electrical issues in vehicles, the most common of which are listed below;
Improper engine cranking – difficulty in starting the vehicle’s engine may indicate that the battery is failing to provide power, commonly a result of a faulty or damaged battery or alternator, or an issue elsewhere within the electrical system

Battery issues – any issues relating to the battery, such as slow starts, or cut-outs may be amplified or caused by issues elsewhere within the electrical system, such as the alternator (the part providing power to the battery), or the electrical wiring

Light faults – dimming or flickering lights are a common indication of charging malfunctions, or low system voltage. This is often attributed to a faulty wire, degrading battery, or alternator belt issue.

Blown fuses – repeated fuse blowouts are a general indicator of a voltage issue within the vehicle’s electrical system.

If your vehicle is subject to any of the above symptoms, an electrical problem is a likely culprit. Ensure the safety of your vehicle by contacting Auto Service & Tuning Centre to arrange a system inspection today. One of our friendly experts will be happy to assist you.

Why are my car’s headlights dim?

Generally, the car’s electrical system consists of the battery, starter, and alternator, alongside cooling fans, the fuel pump switch, lighting, and the motor. The electrical system is intricate, and generally, if one of the primary components, such as the alternator, battery, or starter, fails, the car will not run or start properly.

Dimming or flickering lights are a common indication of charging malfunctions, or low system voltage. These issues can occur in lights throughout the car, including the headlights, rear lights, and even interior lights. Flickering or dim lights are often attributed to a faulty wire, degrading battery, or alternator belt issue.

Why aren’t my car’s dashboard lights turning on?

Dashboard lights are most commonly impacted by accidental dimmer switch alterations. The first port of call, when faced with any kind of dashboard lighting issue, is to ensure the dimmer switch is turned to maximum brightness. Out with this, a dashboard subject to non-functional lights often indicates either a blown fuse or a wiring issue, both of which may be promptly resolved with an electrical repair service. A diagnostic service may be required in order to ensure the most accurate diagnosis.

How can I tell if my car has a blown fuse?

A car’s fuses are often assigned to a specific electronic system, or category. These categories are most commonly listed as transmission electronics, driver assistance, chassis electronics, engine electronics, passive safety, entertainment system, electronic integrated cabin system, and passenger comfort. Should your vehicle’s electronics appear to be failing in one of these specific areas, for example, the interior lights, it is likely a fuse has blown, and requires replacement.

It should be noted that fuse faults appearing to impact the vehicle’s engine unit, or transmission should always be brought to a professional for repair. Bosch Auto service offer fully comprehensive electronics diagnostic, repair, and maintenance services, covering all aspects of the electrical system, from fuses to alternators.

How are car batteries charged?

Vehicle batteries, including car batteries, are rechargeable units connected to a charging system. This charging system is normally powered by an alternator – a type of generator most often driven by a belt, or ‘fan belt’ on the engine.

The alternator will charge the battery whenever the car is running. As the RPM of the engine increases, so does the alternator’s electricity output. This electricity will either be used to power accessories, such as headlights or, will be diverted to charge the battery.

In the case of a car battery ‘dying’, an external charger can be used as an alternative to the alternator and is generally the best way to get back up and running.
